365 Days in Horse Country – Water Protection

In the not too distant past, you could dispose of your horse’s manure by spreading it on your pasture or in your arena.  You didn’t have to worry about carting it away.  But because of increased governmental vigilance of the preservation of the water supply, more and more horse owners are required to follow strict rules when handling their horse’s manure.

The argument for carefully disposing of horse manure is a simple one; governmental agencies have found that livestock waste contaminates local waterways and groundwater supplies.

Although many horse experts argue that cattle manure is actually much more harmful to water quality than horse manure due to the different kinds of bacteria present is cow manure, all livestock have been painted with the same broad brush.

To help protect the environment and your horse-keeping lifestyle, stay abreast of your local bylaws as they pertain to manure disposal.  Failure to do so may result is fines for you, and could even threaten the very existence of horse-keeping in your area.
