365 Days in Horse Country – Watch a Horse Movie!

up with a blanket, a cup of tea, and a good horse movie!
Horse movies have been around since the beginning of the film industry. In fact, as mentioned in my April 23rd blog “The First Equine Movie Star”, the first moving picture ever made was of a horse. Shot by film pioneer Eadweard Muybridge in Stanford, California, it featured a trotting horse named Abe Edgington.
Horse films comprise a sprawling library of films. Old Westerns going back to the silent film era feature plenty of horses. One called “The King of the Wild Horses, features a black Morgan stallion named Rex who was considered a renegade of his time.
Just about any movie starring cowboy William S. Hart will include his famous pinto sidekick, Fritz. Silent movie star Tom Mix was never far from his faithful mount, a sorrel gelding named Tony, either.
Films from the golden age of Westerns also feature some equine stars. Champion, Gene Autry’s sorrel wonder, shows his stuff in a number of films, including “Tumbling Tumble Weeds”, “Red River Valley”, and “The Singing Cowboy”. We mustn’t forget Roy Rogers and Trigger. Trigger’s best work can be seen in “Son of Paleface”, also starring Bob Hope.
