365 Days in Horse Country – Team Penning

One of the most popular Western sports these days is team penning.

In team penning classes, three horses and riders make up a team and sort three designated cows from a small herd.  Once the cows are sorted, the riders must pen them in a corral located at the opposite end of the arena.  The event is timed, and the fastest, most accurate team wins.

Team penning classes are officiated by two different judges.  The judges watch the action from different positions around the arena.  Two timekeepers keep track of each team’s time.

Just about any horse can participate in team penning.  The horse just needs to be a fast willing mount with good cow sense.

If you live in an area with a lot of horses, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding team penning lessons in your community.
