365 Days in Horse Country – Museum of the Horse

Horses have been a part of human history since long before the first written word was penned.  Nearly every culture on the planet has been touched, and changed, by the existence of the horse.

It’s only fitting, then, that the horse should have its own museum; the International Museum of the Horse, located in Lexington, Kentucky.

Opened in 1978, the International Museum of the Horse encompasses more than 38,000 square feet (3,530 square meters) of space at the Kentucky Horse Park.  Permanent exhibits celebrate the history of the horse and its relationship to humankind throughout the ages.

Also included in the museum’s permanent exhibit are Horse Breeds of the World, describing hundreds of breed, both extinct and living; the Legacy of the Horse, which chronicles the horse in human history; Horses in Sport and Recreation, detailing equine sports and activities; and Sculptures at the Park, showcasing bronze sculptures of horses by various artists located throughout the Kentucky Horse Park.

Temporary exhibits highlight different aspects of the horse-human relationship, such as displays of equine photography, the horse’s role in a particular area of history, and the horse in ancient artwork.
