365 Days in Horse Country – Homemade Horse Treats

You don’t need a special occasion to make homemade treats for your horse.  The time you spend putting some recipes together for your equine buddy is time well spent simply because your horse will love you more for the trouble you took.

Here are a couple of simple recipes you can follow to show your horse how special he is to you:

Cowboy Stew (from “The Original Book of Horse Treats”, by June V. Evers)

3 pounds (1.36 kg) carrots, shredded

2 cups (160 g) sweet feed

2 cups (160g) oats

1 flake of timothy alfalfa hay mix

In a blender, gradually blend the carrots, adding about ½ cup (125 ml) of water to help it blend.  Place into a bowl.  Add the sweet feed and oats and mix thoroughly.

Put the flake of hay mix in a feed bucket and pour the mixture over the top as a garnish.

Toast Nuggets (from “The Original Book of Horse Treats”, by June V. Evers)

1 piece of white or wheat bread

Strawberry, raspberry, or grape jam

Sugar

Toast the bread until it is crispy.  Then spread jam thickly onto toast and sprinkle about
a tablespoon of sugar on top.  Cut into quarters and feed cool.  Your horse will love them!
