Days in Horse Country – Fitting Your
Helmet
It’s
important to make sure a helmet fits you right so you’ll get the best
protection in the event of a fall.
Before purchasing a helmet, try it on. The helmet should fit snugly on your head. You shouldn’t be able to move it on your head; either in a front to back or in a side to side motion. Remember, you want it to stay in place if you should fall.
Although many riders prefer to keep the chin strap loose on a helmet, it’s vital that the strap be snug to help the helmet remain stable. A snug chin strap feels annoying at first, but you’ll get used to it. Safety should always come first!
If you have never purchased a helmet before, buy your first helmet at a tack store that provides good customer service and has knowledgeable staff. A knowledgeable salesperson can help you find a helmet that gives you the right fit.
