365 Days in Horse Country – Cleaning Brushes

It’s one of those tasks you never get around to doing; cleaning your grooming brushes.  But it’s important to do this at least once a month.  After all, if you don’t clean your brushes, all you are doingis putting dirt back on your horses when you groom them.

The best way to clean brushes is to soak them in warm water.  If your brushes are made from synthetic bristles, add mild dish soap to the water, stir them around, let them soak for about 20 minutes, and then remove them.  Rinse them thoroughly and let them dry in the sun.

For brushes with natural hair bristles, use warm water and a dab of horse shampoo.  Wet the bristles and rub the shampoo on them to build a lather.  Work the shampoo in between the hairs.  Rinse the bristles thoroughly with warm water until the water runs clean with no more shampoo foam.  Shake the brushes out and let them dry in the sun.
